Beat the Heat with Water Activities

Listen, June in Fort Lauderdale is hot, and I mean really hot. We're talking 90+ degrees with humidity that'll have you sweating through your shirt before you reach your car. So here's my advice: get in the water.

Head to Las Olas Beach early, and I mean early, around 7 or 8 AM before the sun becomes absolutely relentless. The water is warm and inviting this time of year, perfect for swimming or paddleboarding. If you want to avoid the typical beach crowd altogether, try taking a kayak tour through the New River or along the Intracoastal Waterway. The mangroves are lush right now, and you'll spot egrets, herons, and maybe even a manatee or two. It's peaceful, it's active, and you'll stay relatively cool while paddling.

Another solid option is catching a morning or evening boat tour. Several outfitters run dolphin-watching cruises from the downtown marina area, and departing when the sun is lower in the sky makes the whole experience more enjoyable. Plus, you're guaranteed water views and a nice breeze.

Explore Indoor and Evening Entertainment

Since daytime heat is no joke in June, embrace the air conditioning and plan some indoor adventures. The Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art downtown is excellent for a few hours of cultural immersion, and the building itself is beautifully designed with plenty of cool spaces. If you're into history, the Stranahan House offers guided tours that go pretty deep into South Florida's founding era, and they're surprisingly fascinating even if historical homes aren't usually your thing.

Come evening, when the temperature finally drops a bit, this is when Fort Lauderdale really comes alive. Head to Las Olas Boulevard for dinner and drinks. The outdoor patios fill up after sunset, restaurants have fantastic happy hours, and there's genuine energy in the air. Catch a live music venue in the arts district, grab craft cocktails, or just people-watch from a sidewalk table. The vibe is totally different once the sun goes down.

Take Advantage of June's Cultural Events

June is Pride Month, and Fort Lauderdale has a strong LGBTQ+ community with various Pride events throughout the month. Street festivals, parties, and celebrations happen across Wilton Manors and downtown, making it a vibrant time to experience South Florida's diversity and inclusive culture. Duke, our Active Owl mascot, always reminds us that the best weekends are ones where everyone feels welcome.

Beyond Pride, June also brings outdoor festivals and markets to neighborhoods like Riverfront and the Design District. These usually run during cooler evening hours, which is smart planning on the organizers' part. You'll find local vendors, food trucks, live music, and craft beer. It's quintessential South Florida casual, and honestly, some of my favorite weekend moments happen at these smaller, neighborhood-focused events.

Day Trips Worth the Drive

If you're willing to venture slightly outside Fort Lauderdale, consider heading west to the Everglades for an airboat tour. Yes, it's hot and humid out there too, but the early morning tours are incredible. You'll see alligators, birds, and untouched natural landscape that feels a world away from the beach crowds. Book an early slot, bring tons of water, and wear sunscreen.

Alternatively, head north to Deerfield Beach Pier for the day. It's only about 15 minutes from central Fort Lauderdale, feels slightly less touristy than Las Olas Beach, and the fishing pier is a cool spot to hang out if you want a change of scenery.

My honest take? June in Fort Lauderdale requires embracing water, timing your activities around the heat, and shifting your schedule toward mornings and evenings. But if you're smart about it, you'll have an active, enjoyable weekend without melting completely.
